About the Legion of Honour

This order of merit was established by Napoleon Bonaparte on May 19, 1802, to recognize "outstanding achievements" of military personnel and civilians in the fields of culture, science, industry, commerce, and creative activities during peacetime and war. Together with the National Order of Merit, it is awarded by the French government upon the decision of the President of the Republic. The red ribbon on this medal is a remnant of the "Order of St. Louis" established by Louis XIV in the 17th century.

Japanese recipients of the award include Taikan Yokoyama in the past, and more recently, Tadao Ando, Riyoko Ikeda, Seiji Ozawa, Kenzo Takada, Heisuke Hironaka, and Mamoru Mohri.
